Welcome!

Who are we?

Young Minds Early Learning Centre is owned and operated by Elissa Katzman and Johanna Carnovale, both of whom are Ontario Certified Teachers (OCT) who have been working with preschoolers in the East Leslieville and Upper Beaches community since 2009.

Johanna graduated from OISE with her Primary/Junior Bachelor of Education in the Inner City program in 2008 with a particular focus on early literacy skills. She moved to Toronto from her hometown of Perth, Ontario, in 2007 and lives in the east end with her husband, Mike, and their cat, Sookie.

Elissa graduated from York University with her Bachelor of Education in the Urban Diversity program in 2009, and worked in daycare centres and schools, running workshops for team-building and co-operative learning strategies. She lives with her husband, children, and Portuguese water dog, Ralph, in the west end of Toronto.

How we began

After spending time working in Kindergarten classrooms, Johanna and Elissa recognized a great need to help preschool-aged children prepare for the transition to full-time schooling. Young Minds began in 2009 as a small, part-time preschool program to introduce neighbourhood children to a school environment and since then has blossomed into the thriving community hub for young local families that we are today!

Young Minds’ educational consulting business stemmed from Johanna and Elissa’s particular interest in the social-emotional needs of young children and the desire to help families gain strategies to address these needs on an individual, personalized basis.

Our vision

Our vision is to create a nurturing environment where young minds are encouraged to grow. Guided by the principles of child-centred learning, our programming reflects the needs and interests of our students. By creating a positive, safe and healthy learning environment, we foster the development of a child's sense of self worth, nurture vital social skills and help them become experienced decision-makers.

Based on the Ontario Curriculum expectations and guided by the needs of our community, our programs provide a solid foundation in literacy, numeracy and the arts. We believe that we can enrich our students' lives through integrated learning within a structured, and above all fun, environment.

Programs

Preschool

Young Minds provides a unique preschool experience for children ages 2 1/2 – 4. Our classes are semi-private with two teachers and no more than 5 children attending 2 or 3 classes per week. Our program runs Monday through Friday from 8:30am-11:00am. A healthy and nutritious mid-morning snack is provided each day. We have 2 program options:

3-day (Mon, Wed, Fri), 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
2-day (Tues and Thurs), 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

With our ratio of two teachers for each group of five students, we create a calm, nurturing environment that encourages the growth of each individual student to their full potential.
With Ontario’s new full-day Kindergarten in place, our enrichment programs will help our students make a smooth transition to the rigors of full-day instruction by emphasizing:

  • Becoming confident, independent decision-makers
  • Development of our students’ fine motor skills
  • Individual social and academic growth
  • A love of learning

We believe in the benefits of an integrated curriculum where literacy, numeracy, science, and the arts are tied together and students can apply what they learn to their day-to-day life. All early AM classes will include a hearty snack and all late AM classes will include a light lunch.

At Young Minds, your child will be participating in a wide variety of fun and creative activities, including music and dance, sensory play, arts and crafts, read-alouds, drama, science experiments, cooking, building, active play and community walks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

We are located in the Upper Beaches at 85 Eastwood Road, Toronto, near the intersection of Coxwell and Gerrard.

How many children and teachers are in a class?

Each class has no more than 5 children and 2 teachers.

Does my child have to be potty trained to attend your program?

While we encourage that your child be fully ready to use the toilet before they attend our program, we understand that sometimes the child is not ready in time, but we do encourage that you have begun to introduce your own toilet learning routines at home. We will work with your family towards your toilet learning goals, but we do not have diaper-changing facilities on site.

I’m on the waiting list. When will I know if I have a spot?

Once our programs are full, spots only become available if someone gives up their place. As such, we only know when a spot is free once a family informs us that they will no longer be attending. If a place becomes available it is offered to families who have completed the application process (application form, administration fee, and family visit) in the order that we received the applications.

How old does my child have to be to enter your program?

Our classes are designed for children aged 2.5-4 years, but we will occasionally accept children slightly younger than 2.5 if we feel that the program would be a good fit.

Can my child start at Young Minds in January?

Only if a spot becomes available. Our programs run from September-June and families sign up for the full school year. Sometimes spots become available part-way through the year, which we offer to our waiting list first.

Can my child attend full time?

In order to allow the most families possible to enjoy our program, we only offer part-time 2-day or 3-day programs.

What if my child has allergies or other health concerns?

All of our teachers are first aid/CPR certified, and we are able to accommodate children with special health needs. We will work with you to figure out the best solution for accommodating your child.

Can I book a tour of the space?

Yes, a visit with your child is required to complete your application process. We only schedule visits when school in open (Mon-Fri, 8:30-2:00) so that you can experience our classes “in action.” Please contact us to book a visit.
